Have a good look at the recent celebrities, many will be gazing with crystal-clear vision thanks to laser eye surgery. It could be common sense that those who make such a good living out appearances are very conscious of how their face appears when in front of a camera. The surge is popular with those from Film, TV and music, such as Brad Pitt, Courtney Cox and U2’s Adam Clayton. In a surprise twist, Elton John has also had the operation done, despite forging a career around his weird and wonderful spectacles, there comes a point where the inconvenience of having a sight problem is outweighed by the ease at which it can be corrected.

Media personalities too are also utilising eye surgery as their profile gets more exposure. Perennial faces on TV such as Paul Ross and Denise Van Outen are evangelists of laser eye surgery, and even some radio presenters have had the operation, like Johnnie Walker and Roberto. Some have other reasons for doing it: Ewan McGregor had Lasik eye surgery before biking off on “Long Way Round” to ride across the world. In this case, it was simply the practicality of having to wear spectacles inside an enclosed cycle helmet in a bewildering variety of conditions, however he was pleased to boast in his book of the journey that he now had the same eyesight as an astronaut.

Being able to lose the specs has also made surgery popular with sports personalities. Tiger Woods and several other top golfers have had LASIK, although in Tiger’s case there was an unexpected side-effect in not recognising his wife that well. Many other sportsmen and women are having this done, and several clinics boast a client list from the US Baseball and Football leagues. In sports where there is restrictive headgear, where spectacle lenses can steam up or fog, or where contacts or lenses cannot be worn at all, such as swimming, the number of celebrities taking up the surgical option will surely increase.
