Problems Between Alcohol And Exercising

by on Feb.13, 2011, under Uncategorized

On Friday afternoon after you leave work, you probably think about going out and having a few drinks with friends to relax and wind down. Even though you may think you deserve to go out and have a few drinks, there are some things that you should certainly keep in mind. This is especially true since you might need to deal with Self Defense

Like any other day, tomorrow is going to be a day for exercise, and since you are exercising on a regular basis, a few drinks of alcohol won’t really hurt anything, right? Before you decide to rush out to the local bar, there are a few things below that you should think about before you make your choice about going out to drink some alcohol.

Research has proven that even small amounts of alcohol with increase muscular endurance and the output of strength, although these types of benefits are very short lived. After 20 minutes or so, the problems will begin to surface. All of the negative side effects associated with alcohol will easily outweigh any possible benefits that it can have. No matter how you look at it, alcohol is a poison that can really harm your body if you aren’t careful.

The negative side of alcohol can reduce your strength, endurance, aerobic capability, recovery time, ability to metabolize fat, and even your muscle growth as well. Alcohol will also have an effect on your nervous system and brain. If you use it long term, you can cause severe deterioration of your central nervous system. Even with short term use, nerve muscle interaction can be reduced which will result in a loss of strength.

Once alcohol reaches the blood cells, it can and probably will damage them. With alcohol users, inflammation of the muscle cells is a very common thing. Over periods of time, some of these cells that have been damaged can die which will result in less functional muscle contractions. Drinking alcohol will also leave you with more soreness of your muscles after you exercise, which means that it will take you a lot longer to recuperate.

Alcohol will also have many different effects on your heart and circulatory system as well. When you drink any type of alcohol, you may begin to see a reduction in your endurance capabilities. Anytime you drink, your heat loss will increase, due to the alcohol simulating your blood vessels to dilate. The loss in heat can cause your muscles to become quite cold, therefore become slower and weaker during your muscle contractions.

Drinking alcohol can also lead to digestive and nutrition problems as well. Alcohol cause a release of insulin that will increase the metabolism of glycogen, which spares fat and makes the loss of fat very hard. Due to alcohol interfering with the absorption of several key nutrients, you can also become anemic and deficient with B type vitamins.

Because your liver is the organ that detoxifies alcohol, the more you drink, the harder your liver has to work. The extra stress alcohol places on your liver can cause serious damage and even destroy some of your liver cells.

Since alcohol is diuretic, drinking large amounts can put a lot of stress on your kidneys as well. During diuretic action, the hormones are secreted. This can lead to heightened water retention and no one who exercises will want this to happen.

If you must drink alcohol, you should do it in moderation and never drink before you exercise, as this will impair your balance, coordination, and also your judgement. Think about your health and how you exercise – and you may begin to look at things from a whole new prospective.

HOW ALCOHOL RETARDS DIGESTION.

by on Jan.08, 2010, under Uncategorized

And here, in order to present people who don’t seem to be familiar with, the process of digestion, a clear idea of that necessary operation, and therefore the result produced when alcohol is taken with food, we quote from the lecture of an English physician, Dr. Henry Monroe, on “The Physiological Action of Alcohol.” He says:

“Every kind of substance used by man as food consists of sugar, starch, oil and glutinous matters, mingled along in various proportions; these are designed for the support of the animal frame. The glutinous principles of food  fibrine, albumen  and  casein  are used to create up the structure; whereas the  oil, starch  and  sugar  are chiefly used to generate heat within the body.

“The primary step of the digestive method is the breaking up of the food in the mouth by suggests that of the jaws and teeth. On this being done, the saliva, a viscid liquor, is poured into the mouth from the salivary glands, and as it mixes with the food, it performs a very necessary half within the operation of digestion, rendering the starch of the food soluble, and gradually changing it into a type of sugar, once which the other principles become additional miscible with it. Nearly a pint of saliva is furnished every 24 hours for the use of an adult. When the food has been masticated and mixed with the saliva, it is then passed into the stomach, where it’s acted upon by a juice secreted by the filaments of that organ, and poured into the stomach in large quantities whenever food comes involved with its mucous coats. It consists of a dilute acid known to the chemists as hydrochloric acid, composed of hydrogen and chlorine, united along in certain definite proportions. The gastric juice contains, additionally, a peculiar organic-ferment or decomposing substance, containing nitrogen one thing of the character of yeast termed  pepsine , which is well soluble in the acid simply named. That gastric juice acts as a straightforward chemical solvent, is proved by the very fact that, after death, it has been known to dissolve the abdomen itself.”

It is a slip-up to suppose that, once a sensible dinner, a glass of spirits or beer assists digestion; or that any liquor containing alcohol even bitter beer can in any manner assist digestion. Mix some bread and meat with gastric juice; place them in a phial, and keep that phial in an exceedingly sand-tub at the slow heat of 98 degrees, sometimes shaking briskly the contents to imitate the motion of the abdomen; you’ll realize, when six or eight hours, the entire contents blended into one pultaceous mass. If to another phial of food and gastric juice, treated in the identical approach, I add a glass of pale ale or a quantity of alcohol, at the tip of seven or eight hours, or even some days, the food is scarcely acted upon at all. This can be a fact; and if you’re led to ask why, I answer, as a result of alcohol has the peculiar power of chemically affecting or decomposing the gastric juice by precipitating one in all its principal constituents, viz., pepsine, rendering its solvent properties abundant less efficacious. Hence alcohol can not be thought of either as food or as a solvent for food. Not because the latter certainly, for it refuses to act with the gastric juice.

“‘It’s a remarkable fact,’ says Dr. Dundas Thompson, ‘that alcohol, when added to the digestive fluid, produces a white precipitate, thus {that the} fluid is now not capable of digesting animal or vegetable matter.’ ‘The utilization of alcoholic stimulants,’ say Drs. Todd and Bowman, ‘retards digestion by coagulating the pepsine, a necessary element of the gastric juice, and thereby interfering with its action. Were it not that wine and spirits are rapidly absorbed, the introduction of those into the stomach, in any quantity, would be a complete bar to the digestion of food, as the pepsine would be precipitated from the solution as quickly as it absolutely was shaped by the stomach.’ Spirit, in any amount, as a dietary adjunct, is pernicious on account of its antiseptic qualities, that resist the digestion of food by the absorption of water from its particles, in direct antagonism to chemical operation.”

MEDICAL TESTIMONY ON ALCOHOL.

by on Jan.08, 2010, under Uncategorized

Dr. Ezra M. Hunt says: “The capacity of the alcohols for impairment of functions and the initiation and promotion of organic lesions in important elements, is unsurpassed by any record in the entire range of medicine.  The facts as to the current are thus indisputable, and therefore far granted by the profession, on be not debatable . Changes in abdomen and liver, in kidneys and lungs, in the blood-vessels to the minutest capillary, and in the blood to the littlest red and white blood disc disturbances of secretion, fibroid and fatty degenerations in virtually every organ, impairment of muscular power, impressions so profound on both nervous systems as to be often toxic these, and such as these, are the oft manifested results. And these aren’t confined to those referred to as intemperate.”

Professor Youmans says: “It is evident that, thus far from being the conservator of health, alcohol is an active and powerful reason for disease, interfering, because it will, with the respiration, the circulation and therefore the nutrition; currently, is any alternative result doable?”

Dr. F.R. Lees says: “That alcohol should contribute to the fattening method under certain conditions, and turn out in drinkers fatty degeneration of the blood, follows, as a matter of course, since, on the one hand, we tend to have an agent that  retains waste  matter by lowering the nutritive and excretory functions, and on the other, a  direct poisoner  of the vesicles of the vital stream.”

Dr. Henry Monroe says: “There is no reasonably tissue, whether or not healthy or morbid, which will not bear fatty degeneration; and there is no organic disease thus troublesome to the medical man, or therefore difficult of cure. If, by the help of the microscope, we have a tendency to examine a very fine section of muscle taken from an individual in good health, we have a tendency to notice the muscles firm, elastic and of a bright red color, created from parallel fibres, with beautiful crossings or striae; but, if we tend to equally examine the muscle of a man who leads an idle, sedentary life, and indulges in intoxicating drinks, we detect, at once, a pale, flabby, inelastic, oily appearance. Alcoholic narcotization appears to provide this peculiar conditions of the tissues  additional than any other agent with which we are acquainted.  ‘Three-quarters of the chronic illness which the medical man has to treat,’ says Dr. Chambers, ‘are occasioned by this disease.’ The eminent French analytical chemist, Lecanu, found as much as one hundred and seventeen elements of fat in one thousand components of a drunkard’s blood, the very best estimate of the number in health being eight and one-quarter components, while the ordinary quantity is no more than two or three parts, therefore {that the} blood of the drunkard contains forty times in way over the ordinary quantity.”

Dr. Hammond, who has written, in partial defense of alcohol as containing a food power, says: “When I say that it, of all different causes,  is most prolific  in exciting derangements of the brain, the spinal twine and the nerves, I make an announcement which my own experience shows to be correct.”

Another eminent physician says of alcohol: “It substitutes suppuration for growth. It helps time to supply the consequences old; and, in a very word, is the genius of degeneration.”

Dr. Monroe, from whom “Alcohol, taken in tiny quantities, or largely diluted,  as in the shape of beer, causes the stomach gradually to lose its tone, and makes  it dependent upon artificial stimulus. Atony, or want of tone of the abdomen, gradually supervenes, and incurable disorder of health results. Should a dose of alcoholic drink be taken daily, the heart will terribly usually become hypertrophied, or enlarged throughout. Indeed, it’s painful to witness how  many  persons are actually laboring beneath disease of the center, owing chiefly to the utilization of alcoholic liquors.”

Dr. T.K. Chambers, physician to the Prince of Wales, says: “Alcohol is extremely the most ungenerous diet there is. It impoverishes the blood, and there’s no surer road to that degeneration of muscular fibre so much to be feared; and in heart disease it is a lot of particularly hurtful, by quickening the beat, inflicting capillary congestion and irregular circulation, and so mechanically inducing dilatation.”

Sir Henry Thompson, a distinguished surgeon, says: “Do not take your daily wine underneath any pretext of its doing you good. Take it frankly as a luxury one that should be procured, by some persons very lightly, by some at a high price,  however continually to be paid for. And, principally, some loss of health, or of mental power, or of calmness of temper, or of judgment, is the price.”

Dr. Charles Jewett says: “The late Prof. Parks, of England, in his great work on Hygiene, has effectually disposed of the notion, long and very typically entertained, that alcohol could be a valuable prophylactic where a dangerous climate, unhealthy water and different conditions unfavorable to health, exist; and an unfortunate experiment with the article, within the Union army, on the banks of the Chickahominy, within the year 1863, proved conclusively that, instead of guarding the human constitution against the influence of agencies hostile to health, its use provides to them extra force. The medical history of the British army in India teaches the same lesson.”

But why gift farther testimony? Is not the proof complete? To the person who values good health; who wouldn’t lay the muse for disease and suffering in his later years, we need not provide a single extra argument in favor of entire abstinence from alcoholic drinks. He will eschew them as poisons.
