Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Van Halen Had Hip Replacement

  It was in 1999 at the age of 44 that Eddie Van Halen, a famous lead guitarist and co-founder of the hard rock music group underwent a hip replacement surgery, according to the USA Today website.

Van Halen’s high-risk stage stunts and  crashes from which he faced several injuries, got him avascular necrosis, the website reports.

Avascular necrosis causes bone tissue to die due to lack of blood supply, MayoClinic website says. The other medical name for it is osteonecrosis which can lead to small break-ups in the bone which eventually will collapse.

The website also says that the blood flow to a section of a bone can be interrupted if the bone is fractured or the joint becomes dislocated. Avascular necrosis is also associated with long-term use of high-dosage steroid medications and excessive alcohol intake.

The hip is at risk of developing avascular necrosis. Avascular necrosis, if left untreated gets worse from time time and patients will have to deal with it for a lifetime.

The USA Today website says that Van Halen has gone through a hip replacement surgery in Los Angeles. Orthopaedic surgeon John R. Moreland was the attending orthopaedic surgeon of Van Halen who also conducted the procedure to Elizabelth Taylor and Liza Minneli.

After two weeks of his hip replacement, Van Halen was thrilled with the repercussion.

The Free Dictionary website defines hip replacement as a surgery to relieve pain and restore range of motion by realigning or reconstructing a joint.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, over 134,000 total hip replacement surgeries were performed in 1995.

The typical age of the patients who underwent hip implants is 67 since deterioration is expected to develop  after the age  of 60. Elder patients is at risk of getting prosthetic hips because they become less lively and uses less strain.

  More young patients like Van Halen are getting into hip replacement, according to Moreland.

Due to several technological advancements, the hip replacement procedure can be less painful to younger patients after the anaesthesia subsides.
